Ann Tutwiler appointed Board Chair of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has appointed Ann Tutwiler as Board Chair to succeed Felia Salim, who is completes her tenure in May. Ms Tutweiler will take up the position on 1st June.

“Ann brings to us a huge amount of global experience in food and agriculture where she has been in forefront of changes to make food systems better for people and for the planet” said Felia Salim “The Board and staff of GAIN are delighted that she has agreed to help lead our work over the next three years”

GAIN works to support positive food system change in eleven countries in Africa and Asia, and aims to improve the access of 1.5 billion people to nutritionally enhanced staple foods, and the access of 25 million people to healthier diets. 

“I am excited to be invited to chair GAIN’s Board, an organisation that is making a difference for millions of lives worldwide,” said Ms Tutwiler. “Food systems and nutrition are now recognised as fundamental to tackling the big issues of our times – poor diets, hunger, environment sustainability, and climate change.  GAIN’s mandate and commitment to transform food systems by making healthier diets for all more affordable and sustainable is a cause I am honoured to support” 

Ann Tutwiler has worked at senior levels in foundations, the private sector and US Government, where at the US Department of Agriculture she was the Global Food Security Coordinator, and helped develop President Obama’s Feed the Future strategy. She served as the first woman Deputy Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and led Bioversity International from July 2013 to February 2019, where her work was recognised by the award of the 2023 Food Planet Prize for its ground-breaking Biodiversity Index.  She is currently a Senior Fellow with Meridian Institute, Senior Advisor to the Food Forward Consortium and chairs the Expert Review Committee for the Food and Agriculture Benchmark for the World Benchmarking Alliance. She is a Board member of CABI.
